Short History of the NBA, WNBA, NCAA
The history of american basketball is rich with personalities and success through its three different leagues: the NBA, the NCAA and, most recently, the WNBA. The origins of basketball in the US begin in Springfield, Massachusetts. Here James Naismith developed the game for young men attending the YMCA in order to deal with the harsh winters outside and their idle time inside. Naismith nailed up peach baskets to each end of the gym and gave the players a ball to try and throw in to the baskets. He sketched out the fundamental rules of basketball that day in 1891, which are still used today. The first professional league began seven years later and eventually evolved into the different leagues we have now.

Famous Fixed NBA Games
Every time an NBA team loses a close game or, especially, a game with lopsided foul counts, fans half-heartedly cry that the game was fixed. That feeling deep in the pit of fans’ stomachs was churned into real worry when Tim Donaghy, an NBA official, admitted in 2008 that he had illegally manipulated some games he officiated to cover spreads. Of course, he has been sacked and is in federal prison now but before that referred to two pivotal games that he claims were fixed by his calls to provide the desired outcome.

Business Technology Breakthrough: Electronic Advertising Scoreboards
In our digital age, the companies that embrace new technology and learn to apply it to their business structures are the ones who flourish and succeed where the more reluctant companies flounder and fail. The early starts of Microsoft and Apple show a simple demonstration of this ideology working. Microsoft chose to ride the wave of technology and embracing open compatibility and sucking up every bit of possible future success it could, while Apple stuck strictly to its narrow path. While Apple makes far superior products of a higher quality, the price and incompatibility with new technology and lines of thought make Microsoft, and the PC market it thoroughly dominates, the choice for many who like their options.

The Fastest Baseball Pitchers Ever!
The fastest baseball pitchers in history are difficult to pin down due the lack of reliable measuring devices in the early years. The fastest baseball pitch ever recorded, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is Nolan Ryan’s 100.9 mph fastball thrown in a game against the Chicago White Sox in 1974. That record has been eclipsed by various pitchers and we’ve included a list of the fastest baseball pitches below. The fastest recorded baseball pitch as of this writing was accomplished by Joel Zumaya in October 2006. Recent NBA Rules Change in Regards to “Too Many Players on the Court”
Never one to sit on his laurels, NBA Commissioner David Stern is always willing to react to any problems he sees in the game of basketball and change the NBA rules. When Charles Barkley was dominating the game in the early 1990s, he changed the rules to only allow a player to dribble with his back to the basket for a three-count, eliminating Barkley’s favorite move. When, a few years later, Shaquille O’Neal dominated any single player sent to defend him, Stern changed the basketball player rules to effectively allow a zone defense. This helped other teams to defend him with multiple players before he even touched the ball. This also freed up other players to score and the game changed from a slow, grind-it-out game back into a high-scoring, fan friendly event.

Shortest Players in NBA History
Ever since the inception of basketball as a sport in the later 19th century, height has been the one dominant trait that gives a clear advantage in playing. Since the basketball rim stands 10 feet above the ground, obviously the closer a player is, the easier it is to score and block baskets. The basketball player and later profuse television commentator Bill Walton is fond of quoting “You can’t teach height,” which succinctly points out the obvious advantage that height gives a player above all other skills. In basketball short players are a rare find and in the professional league, they are even rarer. The shortest basketball player to ever play in the NBA is Mugsy Bogues.

This can encourage players to give their best, and play better than ever. The Farragut High School baseball team had an excellent season and year, going to the 2009 State Championships and winning. This gives the team three championship wins in the last four years, and in the last seven years the team took the State Championship five times. This team is considered one of the best teams in the state, and possibly the nation, no matter what classification is considered. One key player in the championship game this year was Curt Powell, who plays the position of shortstop and has been named the area Player of the Year for Knoxville, as well as the winner of the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year Award for the entire state.
