For basketball fans nothing can quite compare to the sight of a spectacular dunk as it has become the most entertaining play in basketball.  Every fan would agree that is one of the most exciting plays he or she has ever witnessed usually involved a slam dunk.  For basketball fans who love to watch players dunk, there are numerous jam basketball tournaments for all levels of play whether they’re professional, collegiate or amateur. 

Ask any fan and they’ll tell you the most famous jam basketball tournament would have to be the NBA slam dunk contest.  The tournament has been around since the early ‘80’s and was actually introduced in the ABA during the 1970’s.  In the beginning Dr. J and then later Michael Jordan became the two player’s synonymous with pulling off spectacular jams during this tournament.   The tournament began to lose interest among fans after Michael Jordan no longer participated but it’s seen a resurgence in popularity the last few years.

The 2009 NBA slam dunk contest will be one that’s talked about for years to come.  It seems that as the popularity of this tournament continues to grow, more and more stars will be inclined to participate.  The two favorites going into this year’s slam dunk contest were the 6’10” Dwight Howard and the 5’9” Nate Robinson.  After some spectacular dunks by both contestants, Robinson threw down the winning dunk by jumping over the 6’10” Howard.  It was one of the most amazing dunks ever caught on film.

There are also slam dunk contestants held in at the high school and college levels as well during some playground basketball tournaments.  The most recognizable high school tournament is held in association with the McDonald’s All-American game and consists of players from that tournament.  It’s a great chance for fans to see the stars of the future showcase their talent.  Many popular playground basketball tournaments have slam dunk contests as well.  It’s always amazing to see some of the jams the average amateur player is capable of pulling off. 

Even for the youngest fan and player, the dunk is by far the best move in basketball to pull off.  To get the young players started early there are adjust and jam basketball systems that allow players of any age or height to get in on the fun. Players like Lebron James, Nate Robinson, Dwight Howard, and Dwayne Wade are the new generation of dominant jammers.  These players have produced numerous highlight reel dunks over opponents throughout their career but have never participated in the slam dunk contest at the same time.  But thanks to its growing popularity, there is a chance that these players might all participate in the 2010 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.  As an basketball fan, I eagerly await the chance to see some of the best in the world on the same court.
