David Beckham is an iconic British athlete. He is more than just a soccer player and has always been in the news, be it his wedding with the former Spice girl Victoria Adams, his hairstyle, his tattoo or rumours that he has been cheating on his wife.
David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975 and has been a soccer lover since his childhood. He started playing football at the age of 5 and went to a soccer school for training. His passion and love for the game made him work particularly hard, and in no time he had earned a chance to participate in an FC Barcelona training session. He then played for a local youth team before being signed by Manchester United as a young teenager. His performances were so outstanding that he received an award for the under-15 player of the year. The soccer scoreboards showed that he made his professional debut at the age of 17 with Manchester United, and helped United win the Champions league in 1999, as well as many other titles.
After playing for 10 years with United, he then joined the Spanish Club, Real Madrid for £25 million. Real Madrid had a star-studded line up including Zidane, Luis Figo and Ronaldo, but the team never performed as it should have. He started off well but then experienced decreased playing time which is why he finally announced that he would join Los Angeles Galaxy and decided to become the face of soccer in America. Along with the $10 million he would receive a year he is required to show his capabilities and win some major titles for the team, and with endorsements and profit sharing Beckham could earn up to $50 million a year. It was when he was playing for the Galaxy when he got injured and was ruled out of the 2010 World Cup.
Apart from being a reliable midfielder and assist player, Beckham is also known for other things of the field of play. In 2003 he got the name of his wife, Victoria, tattooed in Hindu on his left arm. He is on the front page of newspapers with his impressive and frequently changing hairstyles. During his stay in a hotel room in the 2006 World Cup, his used towels and slippers were auctioned and his fans bought them at a very high price. In 2005 he became the UN Goodwill Ambassador. Companies use him for endorsing their products not only because he is a famous soccer player but because now he is more of a style icon.
His deal with Galaxy has made him one the highest earning athletes of all time. He would not get in the list of the top 20 soccer players in the world, but there is no doubt that he has left a great impact on the game.
