The Chicago Cubs were next when they won their division for only the fifth time in history. They clinched home field advantage when they beat the Mets a few days later. It was the first time in a hundred years that the Cubs reached the post season in consecutive years.

One of the best baseball moments for Tampa Bay fans occurred on September 20th when the Rays attained a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history. Not only that but six days later they captured the American League East crown.

The Boston Red Sox clinched their 5th playoff spot in 6 years while ending the New York Yankees 13 year post-season streak. The Yankees got their revenge later on by beating the Red Sox pushing them to a wildcard spot and giving the title to Tampa.

The National League West title was secured by the Dodgers when the St. Louis Cardinals steamrolled the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-3 on September 25th.

The Philadelphia Phillies continued their dominance of the National League East by winning the title for the second year in a row.

The Milwaukee Brewers grabbed a National League Wildcard position when it outlasted the Cubs for a 3-1 victory

On September 30th, the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins met in a one game playoff for the American League Central title with the White Sox prevailing in a 1-0 game.

The Best 2008 Baseball Playoffs

The 2008 baseball playoffs began with a best out of five games Divisional Series with the following results:

• The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 3 games to 1.

• The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 3 games to 1.

• The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Chicago Cubs 3 games to 0.

• The Philadelphia Phillies prevailed over the Milwaukee Brewers 3 games to 1.

The League Championship Series determined who went to the Fall Classic with the Rays outlasting the Red Sox 4-3 in a hard fought seven game series. The Phillies gained their shot for the World Series by beating the Dodgers four games to one.

2008 Prospect Milestones

Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox threw a no-hitter in only his second start of the season becoming only the third pitcher in over 100 years to do so.
