Dunking TipsKnowing how to slam dunk in basketball is a critical step in being an offensive threat. Shooting jump shots is important but unless you can drive the lane and finish, a defender can stay on top of you and prevent you from getting a look at the basket. These are not NBA , these are tips for players who want to round out their game by adding the deadliest offensive weapon in basketball to their arsenal.These will help a player win contests and respect on the court.

Basketball :

Develop a vertical leap. Unless you are a 7-foot center, chances are that in order to dunk the ball, you’ll need to increase your vertical leap. Slam dunk tips will always start with the height that a player can jump because if you can’t jump to the rim, the rest is not important. Regardless of your height, the training is the same: start with a repetition of 10 sets just running and jumping at the rim. You may not be able to reach the rim at the beginning but over a period of weeks, you will develop this range. Along with this you will need to train aerobically train yourself by doing sets wind sprints and jump rope exercises. Other dunking tips for vertical height include gym training, where weights are used to increase your work load as you run and jump.
After you can touch the rim, the next slam dunk tips revolve around beginning to practice with objects as you jump. Start small: just run and jump to the rim and try to dunk a golf ball. Next, try a tennis ball and see if you can get it above and through the rim. If so, dunking tips dictate using a regular size basketball at this point. Once you can get the ball through the hoop, practice dribbling on the approach as if it were game time.
First used as a basketball term by the great Laker announcer Chick Hearn, slam dunk referred at the beginning to a two-handed jam into the basket. These days, professional players begin the leap to the basket from farther out and often use one hand with plenty of theatrics when going up to dunk. Dunking tips need to address how to hold the ball in both situations. First, with a two-hand dunk, hold the ball as if you are covering the ears of someone’s head–except harder. This does two things: it gives you a strong grip on the ball and it protects the ball from the defense-they have to foul you to get at the ball. A one-hander (which is often necessary from further back to shield the defender on the other side) is accomplished by palming the ball from the top if you can grip the ball this way. If your hands are not big enough, you have two choices: either lift the ball from the bottom up to the rim (think of a waiter holding a tray with the tips of his fingers) or you can use your upper arm to trap the ball in your hand on the way up.

  1. One exercise that has become a staple in my vertical jump training is the Squat Jump. The key to this exercise or any exercise for that matter is technique. With this exercise you will grab a barbell or dumbbell, get in a squat position and jump as fast as you can (not as Hard as you can) and use your knees as shock absorbers versus your back. We want speed, which will help our explosion to the basket.
