It is our passion and pleasure to share our knowledge and expertise with you on our favorite sports. Read on to check out some of the controversy on Dennis Rodman, and why we think he’s one of the NBA’s greatest players.

Dennis Rodman although considered one of the Bulls best players during his tenure, often had on-court outbursts that eventually tarnished his career. Despite his talent on the court, Rodman’s often controversial personality led to numerous technical fouls and ejections throughout his career. In addition to all this, Rodman has had some truly bizarre incidents involving players, spectators and officials. Whether he played for the Pistons, Spurs, or Bulls, controversy just seemed to have a way of finding Dennis Rodman. Perhaps his most infamous moment came as a member of the Chicago Bulls as in what can only be referred to as the incident.

The incident in question occurred on January 15, 1997 at the Target Center in Minnesota and involved a camera man and a very uncomfortable situation. After a missed free throw by Tom Gugliotta of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dennis Rodman and Kevin Garnet battled for the rebound under the basket. As they battled for the rebound, they tipped the ball twice as they drifted towards the baseline. Rodman made an effort to reach for the ball as it was going out of bounds. In the process, Rodman got tangled up with the cameramen and equipment that occupy the baseline underneath the basket. It was at this point that Rodman twisted his ankle on some equipment and fell to the ground. Apparently, Rodman was extremely upset and proceeded to take out his anger on the cameraman. While still on the ground, Rodman gave the cameraman a kick to his groin, striking a very sensitive area for a man. The results were a five minute delay while the training staff dealt with the cameraman’s injury.

The fallout from this Dennis Rodman stunt was quite severe. The NBA, for starters, wasn’t too happy with the negative publicity generated by this incident. In fact, because of Rodman’s checkered past and numerous on-court incidents, the NBA handed down an 11 game suspension. At the time, it was one of the longest suspensions handed down by the league. The suspension ended up costing Rodman over 1 million dollars in lost salary. The cameraman, Eugene Amos, was prepared to take Dennis Rodman to court over Rodman’s assault on his manhood. Eventually the case was settled out of court for the amount of $200,000.00, making this one of Rodman’s costliest mistakes.

His play on the court made Dennis Rodman one of the Chicago Bulls best players but his attitude on and off the court was a hindrance throughout his career. Despite his rebounding prowess and outstanding defensive abilities many teams eventually became fed up with his antics. The end result would be that both the team and Rodman parted ways, often on bad terms. Despite the many championships Rodman has won, his attitude and antics will always outshine his accomplishments on the court.

  1. Man, I hate to admit it, but I think what the man said is true. Rodman will always have that rep, like it or not. He probably doesn’t care – I think he’s doing OK and has a lot of friends. Or maybe he does care. Either way, part of me says it’s his business, his life. Let him live it. But,uh, sports is a public arena, so that’s where the action is. Them’s the rules, Dennis. I salute uniqueness. It’s tough to be an individual. Some people figure out how to do it and keep it on the cool. Some don’t. Time do tell.
