The Great Gary Neville - A Glimpse At His Hugley Successful Career

can reveal that Gary Neville revealed that he is retiring on 2nd February 2011. He was the captain of Manchester United for five years, and was dearly loved by the Man U fans throughout his extensive career with the team. He made his debut for the club in 1992 in the European cup against Tarpedo Moscow in Russia. At that time Manchester United had players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes coming through the ranks. He quickly developed a great partnership with Beckham on the right wing.

In 1995, the soccer scoreboards showed that Neville made his debut for England against Japan in a friendly match. He was the youngest player in the history of England to be chosen for the Euro Cup in 1996. He also featured in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and in the 2000 Euro Cup. In the 2006 World Cup’s match against Portugal, Neville was briefly given the captaincy after Beckham was forced to leave the field after an injury despite the fact that the deputy captain John Terry was on field.

He has been hit by many injuries during his career which is why he was unable to represent England as much as some other English players have. He hasn’t scored a goal in his entire career with England, though he did put in a couple in the wrong end! He played alongside his brother, Phil Neville, and together they hold the record of England’s most capped brothers, with 142 appearances.

His career with Manchester United has been enormously successful. He was considered as one of the best right backs in the league for 15 years. In 1999, Neville played a major role in Manchester United’s success when the team won the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Neville made 54 appearances for United during their unbelievable run in the same year.

In 2006 his team won the first title, the Carling Cup, under his captaincy. In 2007 he led his team to the Premier League title, the first of three straight titles for the Red Devils. Controversy surrounded him when he was recalled by Fabio Capello for the World Cup squad although he never actually got a chance to play. In 2011, he played only one match, because of injuries, and increased competition from up and coming full backs in the Man U squad: such as Rafael. With the standard of his performances declining, he announced his retirement on 2nd February 2011.
