Are Barcelona Simply The Greatest Team Of All Time?

In news, we will discuss how good Barcelona really are. is it right to call “The best team of all time?”

Barcelona is almost universally considered the best team in the world right now. The way they play, the players they have at their disposal, the goals that they score: they consistently amaze on a week-by-week basis. The season before last, they won every single competition that they possibly could have won: no less than six trophies. Last season they did not quite reach these heights: the soccer scoreboards showed that they were ousted from the Champions League by a defense minded Inter Milan, but they still won three trophies.

Santiago Segurola, the best-respected football journalist in Spain rates Barcelona not only as the best team in the world today, but as the best team he has ever seen, and he was around to see the Brazilian and Dutch teams of the 70’s. Now that says something

No team can keep maintain ownership of the ball like Barcelona. In fact, if you look at the stats, they are way ahead of any other team in this respect. The secret is that firstly, one player must always free himself up so that there is always somewhere to play the pass to. Secondly, when they lose the ball, the hunt like a hungry pack of wolves to get it straight back.

Barcelona do not kick the ball hopefully up field, or waste the ball in any way. The first touch of every single one of the players is perfect, giving them seemingly more time than other teams to work their magic. This is one reason why it is hard to get the ball off them. Over any one game, they make way less mistakes on the ball that your average team.

Let’s look at the main players: Pique is tough yet has great finesse. Puyol is just a concrete wall that snuffs out the danger posed by the very best strikers. Alves is a great defender and an amazing attacker, and his work rate is one of the best in the game. Xavi is considered the best passer in the game. Iniesta’s dribbling skills are practically unmatched, and his deftness of touch is sometimes gravity defying. Pedro has phenomenal speed and quick feet. Villa is one of the if not the most lethal striker in the game today.

Then of-course there is Messi. Generally accepted as the best player in the world today, and in the top three of all time alongside Maradona and Pele. His dribbling skills are the best the world has seen since Maradona, his quickness of feet and ability to beat people week in week out is probably the best anyone has ever seen, and his finishing is just deadly.

All in all there really are grounds to call Barcelona the “Best team the world has ever seen.” Of-course this is highly subjective, but I think that if they keep performing like they have, then more and more people will eventually concede that this is in fact true.
