The number of organized, playground style basketball tournaments has increased substantially over the last decade as more people continue to play the sport of basketball. The portable basketball scoreboard has come a long way in the last few years in terms of capabilities and cost. Currently the two types of portable scoreboards available can be broken down into two categories consisting of manually operated and electrically operated models. The benefits of a manually operated portable scoreboard are pretty self-explanatory. These units are very lightweight and portable due to their lack of complicated mechanical or electrical systems. Most electronic models are capable of maintaining score, time and period/quarter but are not capable of displaying graphics. The number displays for score and quarter are more than large enough for players on the court to see. Since these scoreboards are equipped with horns capable of producing sounds in excess of 100 decibels there will be no confusion among players when it comes to stoppages in play.
When it comes to controlling the scoreboard most manufacturers incorporate the use of a hand-held wireless device to operate the unit. The actual control module is about the size of your hand and produces a mirror image of the scoreboard face on the controllers screen. Through the use of specially designed basketball scoreboard software the manufacturer has made operating the scoreboard a snap for the user. Most units can be powered by common household batteries eliminating the need for any wiring installations or extension cords.
When it comes to selecting the right location for your portable scoreboard there are several options one can choose from. Some manufacturers offer an easel-like tripod that can be located anywhere within the vicinity of the court. Other manufacturers offer models that can be mounted to a chain-link fence, provided there is one in close proximity to the court. But by close proximity doesn’t mean on top of the court as many of these portable scoreboards are operable at distances of up to 100 feet.
The portable basketball scoreboard has allowed the development of outdoor basketball tournaments throughout the country with its ease of use. With the amount of cities that these tournaments visit in a year, a portable scoreboard that is both light and dependable is a must. But these scoreboards are great for private courts and playgrounds as well. Now, even the most informal games can bring a small piece of the arena to the playground.
