There are many great basketball coaching drills that you can employ with each focusing on a specific set of skills. When it comes to dribbling, there are several drills you could use with some being more complicated than others. One of the most basic dribbling drills focuses on developing both the left and right hand for dribbling. Players start at one baseline and dribble the length of the court in a full sprint, when they get to the other baseline they switch hands and sprint back. This develops strength in both hands for dribbling.

The “three-man-weave” is one basketball coaching drill that you can use to improve their fast break abilities. The object of this drill is to have 3 players start off at the baseline with each one occupying a fast break lane. The ball should start off in the middle lane and the player has the option of passing either left or right. The players should make their way up the court by passing only, no dribbling, until they reach the other basket. Ideally, each player replaces the player they passed to as they “weave” their way down the court. The drill ends with one of the players executing a fast break layup.

Finally, one of the most overlooked but important aspects of the game are defensive skills. Most basketball coaching drills geared toward defense focus primarily on a player’s footwork. After all, you play great defense with your feet, not with your hands. A youth basketball coach can use these specific drills to improve his overall team defense. One particular drill involves having the team form pairs, with one playing the defender and the other playing the ball handler. The ball handler starts at one corner of the baseline and dribbles to the opposite corner of the half court line. The defender should mirror the ball handler up and down the court. This teaches players body position when playing defense instead of reaching with your hands.

Youth basketball continues to gain popularity among all age groups across the nation and even around the world. The use of basketball coaching drills will not only improve the individual player’s ability, it will help improve the overall play of your team as well. Stressing the fundamentals to each and every player will greatly improve their abilities. No matter what age the player is, executing these coaching drills properly will translate into success on the court.
