For young players looking to improve their games there are several fantasy basketball drills you can create that will produce dramatic results. All you need is a little imagination and the desire to improve your game and you can be on your way. Whether you want to improve your dribbling, rebounding or shooting form, all you need is a basketball and a hoop.

One of the best shooting drills I used when growing up helped sharpen my shooting skills and jumping ability. Let’s face it if you’re practicing by yourself you can never truly replicate game like conditions. Take, for example, the shooting drill commonly referred to as “around the world”. Although this drill is great for familiarizing players with the best spots on the floor to shoot jump shots, it does nothing to simulate any defensive pressure. Very rarely in a game does a player have the opportunity to shoot an uncontested jump shot. By taking a chair and taping a broom to the back of the chair, you can simulate some form of defensive pressure. A corn cob broom works best since it’s the widest and is the most difficult to shoot over. Set up the chair so that the seat faces the basket at the foul line extended. Start off at the top of the key, dribble over to the chair and shoot over the broom. This drill forces you to focus on the rim and elevate when shooting your jump shot.

There are other great fantasy drills that you can use to improve your game while also having fun. Rebounding is an important part of the game and is often overlooked by players and fans alike. You can practice this skill by throwing the ball off the rim underneath the basket and timing your rebound. Dribbling is the most basic of basketball skills and is the most frequently used by every player on the court. One of the drills for dribbling involves speed and control, two of the most important attributes of a good ball handler. You can use the infamous chair again to practice dribbling around a pick. By staying as close as possible to the chair, you can simulate the action of driving around a pick provided by your teammate.

To be the best at any sport requires hard work and dedication. But practice alone can be pretty stale so using the best fantasy basketball drills you can think of can help break up the monotony. You can have hours of fun while also improving the basic skills that are required to make you a great player. So the next time someone asks you what you’re doing with that broom and chair you can reply that “You’re perfecting your jump shot.”

As an electronic scoreboards continue to light up.

  1. These drills are things that I wish I had thought of back when I attempted to play basketball. I could shoot really well… as long as no one was there to block me. I could never practice it on my own, so I just ended up finding a new sport.

  2. That broom idea is awesome. I’m going to have to try that out. I always used a garbage can, but that was never really tall enough, it just got in my way. But having something actually obstruct your vision and consentration would definitely help out in the games.

  3. I’ve used something like this when I helped my daughter practice basketball. I’m awful at it, but she is really good (and about a foot taller than me) so I would take a broom and use that to try and block her shots. It’s a little more difficult than just taping it to chair, but it helped her move around defenders and let me interact with her, even though I’m terrible at basketball.

  4. Really good tips in the article. I’m a basketball player that really loves to practice and I practice a lot by my self and people always ask; Dont you ever get tired of basketball? And I say no because I love to play and I know that the more I practice the better I get and to be good, you have to practice hard and push your self.

Thanks again for the tips in the article
